Best Practices Snapshot
We will be fleshing out a full playbook here soon. Until then, here are a few reminders we reference in-house:
- Ensure you leave approximately 20 pixels of solid color on the top and bottom of the side image design and the top/bottom where it meets the side to reduce the chance of unwanted artifacts.
- Due to how printed edges functions, the use of complete wrap around images and designs are possible but require design constraints.
- Make sure to order an author copy proof of your printed book before ordering a complete order to ensure printer quality and consistency.
- Follow PrintedEdges.com on social media to get previews of new features, best practices, customer examples, and more.
Frequently Asked Questions
What image sizes do I need to use?
After you upload your manuscript, our system will provide the image dimensions we recommend for your printed edges. You can use any image editing software to build these assets. If you upload images that do not match the recommended sizes, the software automatically scales and resizes them to fit the book edges. Always review the generated edge preview (including the watermarked proof) before making your final purchase.
Can I use different images for the left and right edges?
Yes, you can! You have the option to upload separate images for both the "right-to-left" (when flipping pages forward) and "left-to-right" (when flipping backward) directions. The preview displays the combined edge view (as when the book is closed) and the individual edges as if the book were open from each direction. While it is possible to use distinct images, we recommend starting with the same artwork in both directions so the combined edge stays readable on a bookshelf. If you want to attempt a multi-image design, please reach out via email for recommendations and tips before purchasing.
The images I uploaded are displaying in the wrong orientation—how do I fix that?
Use the Rotate toggle attached to each image uploader. After adjusting orientation, the 3D previewer will instantly update with your changes.
Do I have to upload images to all sides?
No. You can upload an image to the top, bottom, and sides separately depending on your design goals.
Can I combine custom edges and colored edges?
Absolutely! You can mix and match custom artwork with our colored edge options to create a unique look.
Can I preview my design before purchasing?
Yes! A watermarked PDF proof is available for download. Use it to test with your preferred printer and binding method. This confirms the design looks exactly how you want it in print. The 3D preview is an estimate based on standard paper and your page count, but variations in paper thickness may alter the design slightly. If you run into issues or need customization, contact printededges@gmail.com.
Is the payment process secure?
Absolutely. We use Stripe to process all payments and provide a range of secure options. After purchase, you are redirected to a confirmation page and your finalized PDF is available in your project dashboard.
What happens to my files after I upload them?
All uploaded PDFs and images are automatically deleted from our server within 24 hours. If you complete a purchase or save it for later, your PDF, custom artwork, and edge previews are stored securely in your project folder for future access. You can permanently delete these files at any time. Once removed, they cannot be recovered, so keep them until you confirm the final printed result is satisfactory.
